The spiritual dimension of mental health
Psyche is another term for the soul: a 1640s definition defines psyche as an, "animating spirit." The word comes from the Latin word psyche or Greek word psykhe "the soul, mind, spirit; breath; life, one's life, the invisible animating principle or entity which occupies and directs the physical body."
Up to relatively recent times the world believed that we had a spiritual or energetic source at the heart of ourselves. Since around 1685 the so called "period of enlightenment" the existence of the soul seems to have been written out of the psychological concepts of who and what we are.
Quantum physics acknowledges that we are energetic beings and provides a structure for incorporation of the spiritual or energetic dimension of our being.
Brain scientist Jill Bolte-Taylor talks about how she discovered what it felt like to have a temporary imbalance between the operating of the two brain hemispheres - Jill Bolte Taylor's powerful stroke of insight
She now believes that that we are far more than who we think we are at the mundane level.
Healing of the spirit - Complementary Paradigms of Mental Health
We prefer to see a personality disorder as a signal from the person's psyche that something needs healing. We provide training in the use of a number of therapeutic tools that the person can use to gain personal insight as to what their symptoms seem to be indicating. Education in basic psychological processes can also give them greater personal awareness as to how their core beliefs and view of self has been constructed from their formative life experiences. This can allow them to create a person-centred and personally-directed plan for healing of the issues indicated. We do not in any way suggest that this process is simple or easily accomplished - after all the adult self may be manifesting symptoms of unresolved trauma that happened a decade or more ago in their childhood.
Reasons for issues we have found are many and various but are often one or more of the following:
- Unconscious patterns of behaviour or false beliefs we are running in our life
- Unresolved emotions and trauma from childhood or a past life
- A spiritual awakening of the individual
- An unusual ability to sense or receive information from other energetic dimensions that is perceived by the individual (or others) as a problem
- Spirit attachment
Self-healing is a unique and personal journey into the inner self. We have found that recovery from a personality disorder is possible and can also be an enlightening and rewarding journey.
The Hearing Voices Network offers information and help to people who have a sensory experience of life that differs from the accepted norm. These sensory experiences include the auditory such as hearing voices from no discernible source. Other unusual sensory experiences might include visions, inexplicable smells or tastes. They include the following as possible reasons for these:
- Cognitive error (misattribution of 'internal speech')
- Physical health problems
- Biochemical (e.g. excess dopamine)
- Paranormal experiences such as feeling the presence of or seeing a person they know to be deceased
- Emotional distress
- Trauma or adverse life experiences
- A special gift or sensitivity such as channelling a creative gift
- Spiritual experiences such as those deemed of a religious nature
- Individual difference
People can be influenced by other forms of spirit including the thoughts and emotions of the living where there may be a strong emotional connection or what may be called a 'sympathetic resonance'. Sympathetic resonance can be initiated by a relationship with another person that could have originated in a family relationship, an intimate relationship with a past lover, or an enemy, and could originate in this earth life, or even a past life.
If a person (or even group of people) are angry and attacking in thought and in conversation then that angry, attacking energy can often be felt by the subject of that anger. It maybe that the source of this situation can be healed using spirit release therapy and also in learning how to psychically protect oneself.
The presenting symptoms of spirit influence, such as hearing voices and other distressing phenomena, are interpreted In the medical model as symptoms of psychosis or dissociative identity disorder (DID) formerly known as multiple personality disorder (MPD). Negative spirit influence is therefore treated by psychiatry with chemical medicines that are used to try to suppress the symptoms.
Dr Robert Hartley says that, 'the "spirits model" considers that some voices may represent a separate intruding consciousness that influences the mind of the voice hearer in distinctive ways, and which can be countered using appropriate measures.'
If the cause of a person's presenting symptoms is known to be spirit influence then the appropriate therapeutic intervention would be Spirit Release Therapy (SRT).
The most common form of spirit attachment (an alternative term for possession) is the influence of spirits of the deceased who have not completed the progression from an earth life to the light of the spirit realms where they ought to be. These discarnate spirits are termed by SRT practitioners as 'earthbound' spirits, or 'EB's. In such cases the SRT practitioner treats the earthbound spirit as a client and helps them to progress to where they ought to be following the death of the physical body.
Spiritual emergency and spiritual crisis
Spiritual crisis is also known as spiritual emergency, where a process of spiritual emergence, or awakening, becomes unmanageable for the individual.
In this video produced by the Royal Collage of Psychiatrists Dr. Andrew Powell discusses the nature of Spirituality in Psychiatry for Today's World.
